Sienna Miller and Josh Hartnett Get Cozy

New couple alert? Sienna Miller and Josh Hartnett certainly seemed cozy at Hollywood's Chateau Marmont on Tuesday night.

Miller, 25, and Hartnett, 28, sat side-by-side on a couch in the hotel restaurant's living room area, laughing and chatting for about an hour before they were joined by a female friend of Miller's.

But they kept things intimate • at one point, Miller stood in front of a seated Hartnett, who held on to her thigh with his hand. The pair eventually headed out, cocktails in hand, to the hotel's poolside bungalow area.

So are the single actors (she split with Jude Law in November; he most recently dated his Black Dahlia costar Scarlett Johansson) an item? "They're friends, just friends," Miller's rep tells PEOPLE. "They were just hanging out."

Sienna Miller Gets Studious For 'Factory Girl'

Starring as pop artist Andy Warhol's muse, Edie Sedgwick, in the upcoming film "Factory Girl," was not something Sienna Miller took lightly. She shouldn't have – it's set to be her breakout role so far in America.

Miller, who grew up in Britain, put her brains to work, intently studying the troubled socialite-turnedmodel-turned-actress prior to taking the part.

"It's very close to me as a project," she told Access Hollywood. "I did about a year's worthy of research. There's a lot to study. She had a very specific way of talking and moving. I loved it. You feel like a historian, you know."

Originally "Factory Girl," which stars Miller alongside Guy Pearce [as Warhol] and Hayden Christensen [as the Lou Reed/Bob Dylan-esque Danny Quinn], was due out months ago. When filmmakers decided re-shoots were needed, getting everyone back together proved difficult, due to the principle characters being involved with other projects. Now that it is completed and just weeks away from it's release, Miller says she's thrilled.

"I'm excited about it," she said. "I feel like we all worked so hard. It was an amazing project to be working on and to play some one who existed. Guy Pearce is extraordinary and Hayden Christensen is brilliant."

"Factory Girl" swings into theatres just in time to be an Oscar contender, premiering just one week before the deadline for nominations. As for Sienna though, don't bring up the golden statue.

"It's too hard to even imagine that," she says about a possible Oscar nod. "I'm just glad that I made a film that I'm proud of. That's the most important thing. Obviously I wouldn't say no, but I don't have any ridiculous expectations. It's exciting."

A source told the publication: “They sat side-by-side on a couch laughing and chatting for about an hour.” “They were then joined by a girlfriend of Sienna’s, but carried on with their flirting.” The onlooker reported that Sienna held her Josh’s hand against her thigh for some time before the pair retired for cocktails to the hotel’s more private poolside bungalow area.
