Naomi Watts decides ‘Veil’ is worth revisiting

Naomi Watts is only a couple of remakes short of having enough to hold her own deja vu film festival. She was in last year’s remake of “King Kong,” starred in the 2002 remake of the Japanese horror film “The Ring” and is waiting to see a final script for a remake of “The Birds.” Meanwhile, there’s “The Painted Veil,” an adaptation of a W. Somerset Maugham novel about Kitty Fane, an unhappy woman who finds a focus for her life in the midst of a cholera epidemic in China. The movie, scheduled to open here Friday, originally was made with Greta Garbo in 1934. “I hate to admit it,” Watts said with a laugh, “but I guess I have had more than my share of remakes.” Some actors won’t have anything to do with remakes, arguing that the recent wave of them indicates that Hollywood has run out of ideas. Watts disagrees, saying, “Some good things are worth revisiting.” She evaluates each remake separately. “King Kong” deserved to be redone with modern-day special effects, she said, and the audience for the original “Ring” was limited in this country by its subtitles. As for the first version of “The Painted Veil” — which actually had been remade before, as “The Seventh Sin” in 1957 — “it’s fairly obscure,” she said. “Although (Kitty was) played by Greta Garbo, I didn’t feel that that was going to get in my way.” She even watched most of the first movie, something actors doing remakes generally avoid.

You may remember that a few months ago we brought you the story here that Naomi Watts had been offered the lead in the film. Well the film’s producers have confirmed the story, they are talking to her to take on the role originally made famous by Tippi Hedron. Ok, that’s not really news unless you consider reiterating old news to be news. What is news is that they say they’ll have some sort of announcement in the next two weeks about the project, including who they’ve hired to write it. Or, who they’ve hired to sell their soul to the devil and piss all over a classic piece of Hitchcock. Hey, I’m not even a fan of The Birds. I love Hitch but there are a lot of his other films I love better. But it’s Hitch. It’s The Birds. The two just go together. Leave it alone. If you’re not leaving it alone, I guess get Naomi Watts. After The Ring and Kong, she’s America’s new scream queen. She fits.

Producers, Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form, at The Hticher junket today in Los Angeles, discussed the remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and confirmed Naomi Watts interest in the lead role. The producers confirmed that Naomi Watts is in fact being talked to for the lead role, made popular in the original by Tippi Hedren. They cannot officially confirm that Naomi Watts has in fact taken the role and signed on the dotted line because the script is not done, but, they know she wants it and they want her for it. They are expecting an announcement from the studio, Universal Pictures, in next 2 weeks regarding the writer chosen for new film. Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes is the production company associated with the remake. The original film, The Birds, was released in 1963. In the original spolied socialite and notorious practical joker Melanie Daniels is shopping in a San Francisco pet store when she meets Mitch Brenner. Mitch is looking to buy a pair of love birds for his young sister's birthday; he recognises Melanie but pretends to mistake her for an assistant. She decides to get her own back by buying the birds and driving up to the quiet coastal town of Bodega Bay, where Mitch spends his weekends with his sister and mother. Shortly after she arrives, Melanie is attacked by a gull, but this is just the start of a series of attacks by an increasing number of birds.
