Cinespace closing Marine studio

Last-ditch efforts to save the Marine Terminal 28 Studio in Toronto's east end have failed, and the studio is closing in what its operator, Cinespace Film Studios, says is "a tragic precedent." Cinespace says it was given only two months to clear out of the landmark studio, following word in mid-December from the landlord, Toronto Economic Development Corporation. The studio, a converted marine terminal, is being demolished to make way for office or retail space as part of Toronto's ambitious Waterfront Revitalization Project. It will close its doors on Feb. 21. More than 500 movies, TV productions, commercials and new media projects have been lensed at Marine Terminal 28 in its 12 years of operation, among them X-Men, Chicago, Don't Say a Word, and, most recently, Killshot with Diane Lane and Mickey Rourke. Cinespace presented TEDCO an online petition with 5,000 signatures and more than 30 letters of support from U.S. and Canadian producers and industry employees appealing for an additional 18 months, to no avail. The studio complained that the turnaround time was too tight and the eviction leaves its clients out in the cold. "The removal of 140,000 square feet of film production space, with no replacement space available for at least 12 months, is another blow to Toronto's film industry," said a Cinespace release. The company operates a number of other studios around Toronto, including its facilities on Booth Avenue and in nearby Kleinburg. Cinespace alleges that TEDCO is shutting down the studio in order to "eliminate competition prior to completion of the Portlands studio," referring to Filmport, a nearby megastudio currently under construction by rival Toronto Film Studios. "Cinespace considers this entire saga to be a glaring example of a rogue city agency, in blatant contempt of its own economic development mandate, systematically dismantling the competitive and vital infrastructure of Toronto's $1-billion film industry." Not so, says TEDCO president and CEO Jeff Steiner, insisting, "TEDCO gave them more than a year's written notice that they would have to depart." "There's been a plan for this area that's been discussed for over three years. It's no surprise to anyone that this area is being revitalized and that it was to occur in 2007," he says. Steiner called allegations of a conflict of interest "absolute nonsense." He noted that Cinespace hasn't had a lease since 2005, that it was specifically invited to bid for the Portlands project, and that TEDCO offered the studio land in Etobicoke to build another facility - which it declined.

Olivier Martinez Interview, Blood & Chocolate

Movies Online recently sat down with actor Olivier Martinez at the Los Angeles Press Day to promote his new film, "Blood and Chocolate,” a darkly romantic thriller that explores the limbo between the human and the inhuman worlds. Directed by German independent film director Katja von Garnier ("Bandits”), the film stars Agnes Bruckner ("Blue Car,” "24”) and Hugh Dancy ("Basic Instinct 2,” "Elle Enchanted”) as the two young lovers who risk everything to cross it, and Olivier Martinez ("Taking Lives”) as the powerful shapeshifter whose survival hinges on stopping them.

The story takes place in modern day Bucharest and tells the tale of nineteen year old Vivian Gandillon (Bruckner) who has spent her life on the run from the truth…that she is a werewolf. When her affections for a visiting American artist (Dancy) threaten to expose her family’s secret society, she must choose between her love for an outsider and betraying the secret vows of her family. Others may have secrets but none as extraordinary as hers, for Vivian is among the last of her kind, leading a tenuous existence under the protection and control of Gabriel (Olivier Martinez), the powerful and enigmatic leader of one of the last packs of loup garoux on earth.

This pack of loup garoux is led by Gabriel, who despite his youthful appearance is perhaps as ancient as he is powerful. Close to extinction, the werewolves must maintain their close-knit ways to persist beneath humanity’s detection. "Gabriel’s driving concern is the survival and unity of the pack,” says producer Hawk Koch. "Having already witnessed what happened to those who strayed, such as Vivian’s family – who relocated to Colorado only to be tracked and murdered by the hunters who discovered their identity – Gabriel will do anything in his power to ensure the survival of his loup garoux in Romania.” Vivian is marked for marriage to Gabriel because he can see plainly her urge to stray away from the pack. "She’s not from the pack,” says Martinez. "She was raised by our pack but she doesn’t really belong to it. She doesn’t think that she belongs to any kind of society. She’s free. And Gabriel knows that if Vivian leaves the pack, it’s going to be the beginning of the end. It would be anarchy and would create an example, which would endanger the unity that has kept them alive.” As is their custom, every seven years the leader of the pack picks a new mate. This time Gabriel picks Vivian. "She represents a new point of view about the rules and the traditions and my character is sticking with tradition because he thinks this is the only way to survive,” Martinez explains. "Gabriel thinks that she is betraying the cause by resisting. He witnessed the old way and believes that the loup garoux have to kill or be killed.” The filmmakers consider the casting of Olivier Martinez to be the linchpin of the romantic triangle formed in the film. From their first meeting, producer Gary Lucchesi, director von Garnier and the renowned French actor were very much in synch. Martinez recalls, "For me it was obvious from the beginning how interesting the project was.” "Olivier is like a wolf,” says the director. "He looks like one and his spirit is like one. That became apparent when Gary (Lucchesi) and I first met him. These characteristics contributed a great deal to the film. We soon realized he was the only person we could imagine playing the leader of the loup garoux." Educated at France's Conservatoire National Superieur d'Art Dramatique, Olivier Martinez (Gabriel) has garnered acclaim for his work in theatre, television and film. Martinez most recently co-starred in director D.J. Caruso's thriller "Taking Lives," with Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke, Kiefer Sutherland, and Gena Rowlands. Martinez created a stir as Diane Lane's lover in Adrian Lyne's "Unfaithful," with Richard Gere; and "S. W.A.T.," alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell and Michelle Rodriguez. Martinez also co-starred in Robert Allan Ackerman's retelling of "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" for Showtime. In a role originally created by Warren Beatty, Martinez played the Italian gigolo Paolo opposite Anne Bancroft and Helen Mirren. Martinez first gained international attention for his performance as a dashing 19th-century Italian cavalry officer who falls in love with a married woman (Juliette Binoche) in Jean-Paul Rappeneau's "Horseman on the Roof." His credits also include Julian Schnabel's critically acclaimed "Before Night Falls," with Javier Bardem; Bertrand Blier's "Mon Homme"; Bigas Luna's "The Chambermaid on the Titanic"; Mario Camus's "La Ville des Prodiges"; and Eric Barbier's "Toreros" with Claude Brasseur. Martinez made his motion picture debut in Jean Jacques Beineix's "IP5” (1992), co-starring Yves Montand. In 1994, he received the Cesar Award for Most Promising Young Actor for his work in Bertrand Blier's drama "1, 2, 3 Soleil," starring Marcello Mastroianni. Here’s what Olivier Martinez had to tell us about his latest film, "Blood and Chocolate,” a love story wrapped in a thriller:

Cruise, McCarthy top list of worsts

Bad sequels and remakes Monday dominated the nominations for the Razzies, an Academy Awards
spoof that pays heed to the worst in Hollywood.
Four of the five worst-picture nominees for the Razzies were sequels or remakes, led by "Son of the
Mask," which had eight nominations, including worst actor for Jamie Kennedy and supporting actor for
Alan Cumming and Bob Hoskins.
The other worst-picture contenders were Rob Schneider's sequel "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo,"
Jenny McCarthy's raunchy romance "Dirty Love," the TV update "The Dukes of Hazzard" and the
horror remake "House of Wax."
Razzies will be announced Feb. 24, the day before the Oscars.
Tom Cruise, a frequent Razzie target, earned three Razzie nominations, as worst actor for "War of the
Worlds" and two of the five slots in a new Razzies category for most tiresome tabloid targets.
Besides Cruise and Kennedy, worst-actor nominees were Will Ferrell for "Bewitched" and "Kicking &
Screaming," The Rock for "Doom" and Schneider for "Deuce Bigalow."
McCarthy earned three nominations for "Dirty Love," for worst actress, screenplay and screen couple
(she and "anyone dumb enough to befriend or date her"). Her worst-actress competitors: Jessica Alba for
"Fantastic Four" and "Into the Blue," Hilary Duff for "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" and "The Perfect Man,"
Jennifer Lopez for "Monster-in-Law" and Tara Reid for "Alone in the Dark."
Paris Hilton received two nominations, worst supporting actress for "House of Wax" and most tiresome
tabloid target. Katie Holmes also was nominated for worst supporting actress for "Batman Begins,"
along with Carmen Electra for "Dirty Love" and the Simpson sisters, Jessica for "The Dukes of
Hazzard" and Ashlee for "Undiscovered."
IRONY ALERT! ABC, whose hit show "Grey's Anatomy" has made headlines over an anti-gay slur
used by an actor, led nominees for this year's awards from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation, the country's leading gay organization that monitors the media. And, yes, "Grey's
Anatomy" was itself nominated for outstanding individual episode.
The network landed eight nominations from GLAAD, the group announced Sunday. CBS garnered five
nods, NBC three and PBS two. Among cable networks, CNN received four, Bravo and HBO three and
BBC America two.
"Grey's Anatomy" has gotten unwanted attention since actor Isaiah Washington used the slur about
castmate T.R. Knight in an on-set dustup in October with co-star Patrick Dempsey, then used the slur
again at this month's Golden Globes as he denied ever uttering it.
Washington apologized Thursday after being admonished by the network.
Nominees for feature film in wide release include "Little Miss Sunshine," "The Night Listener,"
"Running with Scissors," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "V for Vendetta."
The awards -- consisting of 42 categories -- are split into four ceremonies, held in Los Angeles, New
York, Miami and San Francisco in March, April and May.
PARIS HILTON ON PROBATION ... No, that is not the name of a new Internet porn flick. Hilton was
placed on 36 months probation, and ordered to pay fines and go to rehab after pleading no contest in Los

Angeles Municipal Court on Monday to alcohol-related reckless driving, a reduction of an original charge of driving under the influence. Hilton, 25, did not appear in court. The plea was entered by her attorneys. Judge Michael Sauer also gave Hilton the option of reducing her probation to 24 months if she completed 40 hours of community service. No immediate decision was made on that option. EGGERS MAKES CRITICS' SHORTLIST: Novels by San Francisco author Dave Eggers, Cormac McCarthy and Richard Ford, all passed over last fall for the National Book Awards, were among the finalists for the 33rd annual National Book Critics Circle prize. McCarthy was nominated for "The Road," a dire, apocalyptic tale. Ford was cited for "The Lay of the Land," his third novel about American everyman Frank Bascombe. Eggers' nod is for "What Is the What," a fictionalized memoir of a refugee from the Sudanese civil war of the 1980s and 1990s. Other fiction nominees announced Saturday included Ngozi Adichie's "Half of a Yellow Sun," set during the Nigerian conflict that broke out in 1967 and left more than 1 million dead, and Kiran Desai's "The Inheritance of Loss," winner of this year's Booker Prize. Nonfiction finalists include Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma," Simon Schama's "Rough Crossings," Patrick Cockburn's "The Occupation," Ann Fessler's "The Girls Who Went Away" and Sandy Tolan's "The Lemon Tree." Winners will be announced March 8. There are no cash prizes.
