Golden Globe party scene

Despite chilly weather, Los Angeles buzzed with Golden Globes parties this weekend. There were numerous events on Saturday: InStyle magazine toasted NBC's "Heroes" at West Hollywood's Sunset Tower Hotel; Universal celebrated its film "United 93" at nearby Lucques restaurant; L.A. Confidential magazine feted Sony Pictures Classics' "Volver" star Penelope Cruz at Whiskey Blue inside Westwood's W Hotel; New Line's Robert Shaye welcomed a select group to his hillside estate; and HBO celebrated at Chateau Marmont. Sunday saw the British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles' annual Tea Party at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, followed by Lionsgate and Showtime's party at the Sunset Tower. On Monday, of course, the Beverly Hilton was the place to be for the 64th annual Golden Globe Awards afterparties. Late-nighters celebrated during CAA's bash at Sunset Tower and Reveille Prods.' gathering for ABC's "Ugly Betty" and NBC's "The Office" at Les Deux Hollywood.

Alisal edges San Benito

Alisal High boys basketball team gave up significant leads three times Wednesday, the last of which nearly cost them in a 59-58 overtime victory against San Benito. "We couldn't take care of the ball," said Alisal coach Jose Gil. "We nearly blew it, but the important thing is we got the win." Alisal held an eight-point lead with 50 seconds left in OT. Sophomore Jordan Ramirez scored a team-high 18 points. Freshman Jonathan Sosa added 11. David Alejo and Elias Rivera also scored 11 points each.

Sticky Fingaz/Deejay Ra Record 'JMJ' PSA

The 'JMJ' tribute PSA was recorded for Deejay Ra's 'Hip-Hop Literacy' campaign to encourage reading of Jam Master Jay's "Heart of Hip-Hop" biography book amongst students, in the hopes more youth will continue learning about the 'greatest DJ of all time' known as Jazon Mizell to close friends Joseph 'Run' Simmons and Daryl 'DMC' McDaniels, with whom Mizell formed a mid 80's music group which would soon after spread a new art called hip-hop around the world.

Run-DMC were responsible for rap's first top-ten single, multi-platinum album and music video on MTV, not to mention their personal accolades of the first emcees to receive a Grammy nomination, be on the cover of Rolling Stone and act in their own feature film, as well as Run-DMC signing the first known shoe deal designed specifically for non-athletes.

Sticky Fingaz, whose rap group Onyx with Fredro Starr and Sonee Seeza has often been described as a harsher version of Run-DMC, credits Onyx signing to Jason Mizell's 'JMJ' Records in 1991 as the jump-off for their now 15 years in the hip-hop game and over 10 years of movie roles.

The critically praised appearance of Sticky and Fredro in Spike Lee's 1995 "Clockers" film is often credited as what opened the door to today's flood of rappers turned actors, and both Sticky and Fredro have since gone on to star alongside such Hollywood heavyweights as Tiny Lister, N'Bushe Wright, Dennis Quaid, Julia Stiles, Robert Forster and Rosario Dawson among others.

Deejay Ra, who launched a November 2003 Run-DMC tribute with the support of Adidas Canada, has since continued setting up giveaways of Run-DMC "Together Forever" greatest hits CDs and DVDs across campus radio stations along with biographies of Run, DMC and JMJ to give students "a dose of hip-hop history and a love of reading at once," as Juneja described it to KPFK 90.7 FM California radio personality Fidel Rodriguez during a live radio vigil they held the same year for the Jam Master.

Carbon Fiber iPhone Mockup

This is a carbon fiber iPhone mockup that I normally wouldn't care about, but this one comes with a humorous story. Supposedly, Apple will be developing a special edition carbon fiber iPhone called the Carbon Electra X Apple iPhone. It will be limited to 200 units and be given away in the Oscars goodie bags. This is where the story gets iPhoney, but kind of funny. In addition to the beautiful carbon fiber case, the phone will come pre-loaded with every M.O.P. song ever produced, every episode of Mythbusters and Rosario Dawson's cell number. There is also a custom software installed, approved by the FAA, that allows you to use your phone while on board any commercial airplane.

Holiday weekends will drive 2007 boxoffice

Looking ahead as the New Year starts to unfold, that same pattern will prevail as distributors target four-day holiday weekends for the release of films with the biggest boxoffice potential. Based on distribution schedules already circulating for 2007, which obviously are subject to change in the coming months, here's a look at what to expect in terms of holiday boxoffice action in terms of wide or limited releases. Overall, it's a promising slate of high profile product that's scheduled to occupy this prime real estate on the 2007 calendar.

With this weekend, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday period, the amount of new product coming into the marketplace is positively staggering. Megaplexes will be crammed with openings as well as with holdover films from December expanding their runs to take advantage of expanded moviegoing over the year's first four-day holiday weekend.

The picture that seems likely to make the weekend's biggest impact is Paramount and DreamWorks' expansion to about 2,000 theaters of its Golden Globes best picture-musical or comedy contender "Dreamgirls." Directed by Bill Condon, it stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose, Keith Robinson and Jennifer Hudson.

The rest of the holiday weekend pack includes Universal's launch of the drama "Alpha Dog," directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Bruce Willis; MGM's wide release of the family fantasy adventure "Arthur and the Invisibles," directed by Luc Besson and starring David Bowie, Madonna, Snoop Dogg, Jimmy Fallon and Robert De Niro; Sony Pictures Classics' expansion of "Curse of the Golden Flower," directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li.

De Niro and Clooney Together at Last?

One of the greatest things about the film Heat was our chance to finally watch two fantastic actors (Robert De Niro and Al Pacino) act alongside one another. Of course, it wasn't the first time these two Godfathers of cinema appeared in the same film, but it was a moment everyone (including me) had been waiting for. And tell me that scene at the table didn't make the movie. Now, word is trickling out via MTV and Production Weekly that De Niro might be teaming up with another mega-Hollywood giant, George Clooney. Okay, perhaps it's not as jaw-dropping as the De Niro/ Pacino pairing, but nevertheless they're still a delicious on-screen duo. The film in question is Marc Forster's (Stranger Than Fiction) 36, a remake of the 2004 French flick 36 Quai des Orfèvres starring Gérard Depardieu. Pic tells of two cops who compete against each other to solve a series of armored car robberies, with the winner earning a promotion. At first glance, the premise could sound sort of comedic (if you hadn't heard of the original) -- however, I assure you this ain't no comedy. It's a straight-up crime drama, complete with violence, revenge and all that other tasty stuff. De Niro recently told MTV that he will film 36 (which will be based off a script written by The Manchurian Candidate scribe Dean Georgaris) after he's finished with the Barry Levinson pic What Just Happened.
