Anna Kournikova
20 Questions: Anna KournikovaSince she turned pro 12 years ago, many critics of Anna Kournikova dismissed her tennis skills and accomplishments outright, claiming she was famous only for her physical beauty and/or which male celebrity she was dating at the time. How good anyone looks is in the eye of the beholder – but statistics don’t lie: Kournikova actually could play. As a singles player, she was ranked as high as No. 8 (in 2000) and was No. 1 as a doubles player the year before. She never won a Grand Slam event, getting as close as the semifinals at Wimbledon in ’97 and the Australian quarters in 2000. Her career was curtailed because of back injuries, and she retired from competitive tennis in 2003. Still only 25 years old, she spends her time these days championing causes such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of America – through which she stresses the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. Living in Miami, she’s still dating singer Enrique Iglesias, and she plays exhibitions, such as the Mercedes-Benz Classic, which comes to the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates on Feb. 12. She’ll be joined by John McEnroe, Jim Courier and Jana Novotna.
